India’s first non-environmental Carbon-Neutral film, ‘Sweater Weather,’ has hit the floors under Abhi Tundel. The film’s shooting is taking place, ensuring zero waste production and environmentally sustainable conditions. The film is part of the collective effort to achieve United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals Number 12 and 13, which state; Responsible Consumption, Production, and Climate Change, respectively. The film is part of a national-level campaign to reduce India’s carbon footprint by 80%.

There are many main objectives of the campaign. The first and utmost priority is to ban single-use plastic (bottles, spoons, plates, and others). It has been implemented by using reusable and recyclable things during the film’s shoot. ‘The entire crew has their own reusable steel bottles because of which we cut on buying plastic bottles on set,’ shared Abhi Tundel. They are using hybrid vehicles, which have lower Carbon Dioxide emissions because of their better fuel economy. It also decreases other pollutants because the engine load is better handled than in typical petrol and diesel-run vehicles.

Adding significantly to the progress of Sustainable Development Goals, Both Smol Cat films & Empty Cup Films, the film’s production houses have incorporated SDG number 7, which states affordable and clean energy. The use of LED lights is a categorical representation of sustainable lighting. They have a lesser carbon footprint, consuming 80% less energy than conventional lights. As a result, they are much more energy-efficient, producing less waste. Moreover, the film production house has also adopted Sustainable Development Goal number 2, which eradicates hunger by donating all the leftover food to the underprivileged. It not only guarantees zero waste but also adds to the social cause.

The film director, Abhi Tundel, was born in India’s first World Heritage city, Ahmedabad. He has worked as a filmmaker, theater director, and designer for the past six years. Abhi’s art constantly delves into society’s perplexing reality, melancholy, and the single terror of mere human existence. Abhi’s work also touches on equality, juxtaposition, and surreality issues. He shared about the directing his first-ever Carbon-Neutral film: ‘India’s high pollution level has implored many advocates of climate change to take swift actions. We can’t afford and we must not relegate this issue to secondary. Our country’s carbon emission accounts to a miniscule amount out of the global total but we have been on the receiving end of prominent consequences of this drastic climate change.’

Abhi Tundel also provided an overarching set of guidelines that the film industry can adopt to add to the campaign’s objectives. According to him, some rules can make the entire film pre-production, production, and post-production process much more environmentally friendly. Eco-fonts might be utilized to print scripts and paperwork during the pre-production stage because they use less ink. These typefaces help to save money on ink and cartridges. Rechargeable batteries can be used for the audio equipment on the set. It decreases the amount of use-and-throw batteries that harm the environment by ending up in landfills. He concluded that waste separation and the use of zero-plastic bottles on sets are both viable.
